Heraclitus’s Return

The day will come, finally, the time is approaching
when we will see eternity with other eyes
(I myself had to cross this river twice
    to get this far)
even the fire of which we were made
slowly died
(from the ashes that were dispersed far away
I now offer you this poem)
and then it actually happened: we lightly crossed
    to the dark farther shore
where everyone, even the gods, were present.
